Lineage

The time axis comes from Hal Galper, Forward Motion: From Bach to Bebop (2005): directional phrasing, targets on strong beats, upbeat-weighted articulation and ear-first practice. The pitch axis comes from Bert Ligon, Connecting Chords with Linear Harmony (1996): guide-tone voice-leading, outlines and approach patterns as connective vocabulary. Enclosures and bebop scales are common-practice vocabulary that predates both.

What this book adds is the glue: the span index with its three-slot cap, outlines as arrival-plus-cell recursion, the gap rule as a generator for bebop scales, slot budgets as a way to compare how forms feel to play, and a notation that shows both axes at once.
