Melodic Intervals of a Fourth and a Fifth in One of the Three Upper Parts
Read and hear this section in the playable edition →§ 25. — 1) Notes forming a melodic movement of a fourth or a fifth in one of the upper parts may be harmonized by two chords of different degrees: I–IV; I–V.
2) If the first note belongs to a triad, the second must belong to a sixth chord, and vice versa.
3) Two leaps of a fourth or a fifth at the same time in two different parts are to be avoided.
4) The distance between the three upper parts must not exceed an octave.

a) Leaps between root notes; the sixth chord with the root doubled.
b) Leaps between notes that are fifths of their chords: the sixth chord with the fifth doubled.
