§ 40.—1) The six-five chord of the second degree, or the four-three chord of the seventh degree, forms plagal cadences of a special character through the descending fourth in the bass and the stepwise motion of the upper voices.

2) In this case these chords are placed on the various beats of the bar and are prepared by the triad of the fourth degree, sometimes with the fifth doubled.

Plagal cadences through II6/5 and VII4/3 over a held fourth-degree bass, in C major and in A minor
