§ 41.—In realizing the chorales that follow, use the dominant seventh chord, its inversions, and the six-five chord of the second degree.

Most often the seventh is used as a passing seventh over the dominant chord; avoid this chord in root position as far as possible (*), above all with the seventh in the melody. Its inversions are used fairly often, especially the six-five chord and the second (four-two) chord (**).
