All the dissonant notes described above are subject to the rules for descending and ascending suspensions: they do not allow the note of resolution to be doubled, except for roots in the bass, and then at a distance of at least an octave.

Sometimes an exception is also made for the bass of the sixth chord and for notes that are the fifth of the chord.

Consequently the notes that would stand in the way must change position, as is shown by lines in the preceding examples.
