§ 87.— 1) As we have already said in § 53, we call polytonic any succession of two or more chords belonging separately to different keys.

2) In these successions, conjunct motion of the parts and harmonic connection are obligatory.

3) The more notes in common there are between the chords that make up a polytonic succession, the softer and more agreeable its sound.

4) The most remarkable and most frequently used are the borrowed cadence and the polytonic succession of dominant seventh chords.
