The Augmented Fifth Chord (*)
Read and hear this section in the playable edition →§ 80.— 1) It is produced by raising the fifth of a major triad, or by lowering the root of a minor triad:

REMARK.— The augmented fifth chord (2) cannot occur in the minor key; see the spelling of the chromatic scale (§ 66).
2) Apart from its property of being formed by a chromatic passing note, the augmented fifth chord may be used independently when it is prepared by the very chord into which it resolves:
