I. On Root Progressions

1. Ascending root movements—upward fourths and downward thirds—may be used at any time, but mechanical repetition should be avoided here too.

2. Descending movements—downward fourths and upward thirds—only in connections that, as shown on page 146, produce an ascending result.

3. Use skipping movements sparingly until further explanation has been given; successions of them are not excluded.
